Held for the first time in this city, the annual sports activity is hosted by Madam Vice-Mayor Belen T. Fernandez in cooperation with the City Government of Dagupan and is supported by the CSI Group of Companies, Department of Education (DepED), and USATV.
The opening ceremonies was graced by Vice-Mayor Fernandez who for and in behalf of the city welcomed the participants in the tournament while Col. Ariel Querubin, Deputy Secretary General of the Federation of School Sports Association of the Philippines (FESSAP) delivered a message in lieu of BAP National President Senator Antonio Trillanes IV who is attending the Impeachment Trial in the Senate, Graham Lim, BAP Secretary General, and City Councilor Luis “Chito” Samson, 64th NSBC project director who declared the tournament open and other BAP stalwarts.
Initial hostilities included the two matches in the high school and collegiate divisions which saw Malay Boracay National High School from Aklan, Panay Island, and edged Divine World Academy of Dagupan of the host city.
In the collegiate division match up, the University of Luzon (UL) Golden Tigers also of this city, subdued Laguna's San Pedro College of Business Administration (SPCBA) of San Pedro, 112-106 in the extra period. UL could have won the game in the last nine seconds remaining in the fourth period which tied at 92-all, but a UL player missed his desperate shot that caused the extra period.
Exchange of flurries ensued in the extra period that saw UL proved its
superiority in offense as it muzzled the Laguna based visitors which converted only eight points as against the 14 points of UL.
The collegiate champion in this single round robin elimination tournament which ends on March 3, will represent the Philippines in the 9th Asian University Students Basketball Championships in partners with Agri Nurture Inc. (ANI), Healthy Options, Universal Dragon Seeds Corporation, Bestank, San Miguel Corporation (SMC), to be held in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, sometime in July, this year.
