My fallen friend and godfather, Gonzalo (Lito) Puyat II

By: Graham C. Lim
To my fallen comrade Lito, I salute you.
Mr. Gonzalo “Lito” G. Puyat II, age 79, who passed away on January 7, 2013 was twice elected as FIBA President in 1976 and 1980, was at the forefront of the various up-and-down years in the Basketball Association of the
Philippines (BAP), where it was its President starting in 1968 as the successor of former senator and 1936 Olympian Ambrosio Padilla.
I will always remember him as a father-like figure who taught me how to live a simple and clean life and how to run the BAP following my ascension as its Secretary General in the 1990s.
Puyat stood as a godfather during my wedding. For years, I regularly visited him at his Makati City residence to seek his advice on how to run the BAP.
At the time of his death, Mr. Puyat held the position BAP Chairman Emeritus.
Among his closest friends who regularly kept in touch with him were former Philippine Sports Commission (PSC) chairman Atty. Dominador Cepeda, veteran journalist Augusto "Gus" Villanueva, baseball great Filomeno “Boy” Codiñera and ex-Olympian Arturo Valenzona.
Their talks usually centered around basketball developments in the past and present and his distinguished eight-year tenure in the FIBA as its president.
Mr. Puyat was a Hall of Famer whose picture hangs in the museum that housesd the USA Hall of Fame in the Olympic village in Springfield, Colorado. He is the only Filipino to be bestowed such an honor for his various contributions to world basketball.
Puyat was responsible for the Philippines' hosting of the 1978 World Basketball Championship in Manila.
I will surely miss Mr. Puyat but will continue to treasure the fatherly advice he had given me through the
years.
Goodbye my comrade and godfather.

You'll Never Walk Alone
Nenita V. Mendoza
Molino, Bacoor, Cavite --- It was just another day for all except that Nenita Varron Mendoza was finally laid to rest at the St. Michael Cemetery in Molino, Bacoor, Cavite.
Relatives, friends, close associates and ordinary people came to pay respect for the last time to Neth in traditional Catholic ceremonies.
Cars, jeepneys, and other utility vehicles line up on the road to bring Neth’s body from her home in Pag-asa Subdivision, Imus, Cavite to her final resting place.
As I stand watching people from all walks of life helped bring Neth’s body to St. Michael Cemetery, I was extremely touched by the presence members of the Basketball Association of the Philippines (BAP) that Neth had faithfully served since 1996.
I thanked them for their time to be with their fallen comrade, Neth, who until her last breath continued to do her job as Executive Secretary, communicating with all regional BAP representatives to inform them of the various BAP activities.
Whereas Neth, the mother, has crossed the Great Divide, her son has risen to take over her job with the BAP.
Son Neil Kenneth Mendoza will take Neth’s position as Executive Assistant to the BAP Secretariat once thing have settled down.
Neth's two other sons, Nelson Jr. and Nickson, will continue with their studies with the support of their father Nelson.
May Neth's soul rest in peace and uplift the lonely battle of the BAP to do what is right, just and fair in her own way in the Lord's embraces.
Protecting what is just, truth and righteous to what we have started with the BAP since 1996. God bless us all!

Neth Burial Set for July 17, 2012……By: Graham C. Lim
Imus, Cavite --- The late Nenita Varron Mendoza will be laid to rest at the St. Michael Molino Cemetery in Bacoor, Cavite on July 17, 2012 (Tuesday) at 2:00 in the afternoon. Mendoza died last July 8, 2012 at age 50 following a nine-month battle with cancer. She is survived by her husband Nelson, and three sons, Neil Kenneth, Nelson Jr. and Nickson. Neth had worked with the Basketball Association of the Philippines as its Executive Secretary since 1996. Even at a time she was already in poor health. Mendoza continued to help the BAP Secretariat by way of her communication with all the regional representations throughout the Philippines. Neth also joined the Federation of School Sports Association of the Philippines (FESSAP) in 2005 and served as its Executive Secretary. Neth attended the 26th Summer Universiade (Olympies-type of competition among the University students) in Shenzhen, China in August 2011 as head of the Secretariat of the Philippine Delegation. Neth's body currently lies in state at her home in Bahayang Pagasa, Woodsite 3, Escaler Street, Block 14 Lot 7, Imus, Cavite. I enjoin each one of you to pray for the eternal repose of her soul of our Comrade and Friend. |
July 10, 2012 In Memory of Neth at 50……
In Memory of our dear Nenita Varron Mendoza, who passed away last July 8, 2012, here’s a short story about the long-time secretary of the Basketball Association of the Philippines and Federation of School Sports Association of the Philippines from Graham C. Lim. Simply known as Neth to everyone, she died following a lingering illness. She is survived by her husband Nelson and sons Neil Kenneth, Nelson Jr and Nickson Mendoza. Neth had worked as the Executive Secretary of the Basketball Association of the Philippines (BAP) since 1996 and also held the same position with the Federation of School Sports Association of the Philippines (FESSAP) starting in 2005. Up to her last breath, I was in constant communication with Neth through her eldest son Kenneth for all the medical needs of his mom. I have requested all our colleagues and members in the FESSAP and BAP, including BAP President Senator Antonio F. Trillanes IV and FESSAP President David Ong, to pray for the repose of her soul and provide moral support to her family. Neth’s eldest son is presently working part-time but will soon work for us in a certain capacity. Neth left three male children. The second, Nelson Jr., is a first-year college student and plays for the varsity team of the Lyceum of the Philippines University (LPU) in the on-going NCAA basketball tournament. The youngest, Nickson, is still in the high school and is a scholar of the BAP-FESSAP. Neth had been one of the stabilizing force in the BAP even when the controversy with the Philippine Olympic Committee, SBP and FIBA erupted in 2001. As the Executive Secretary, she was a strong-willed, hardworking lady who dealt with all the communication aspects involving the BAP and FESSAP here and abroad. I will always remember Neth as a person who lived a life of simplicity. I have stood through many storms in the past regarding the BAP and FESSAP but it was Neth who was there to make the business is as usual with the two sports organizations. Neth was the one who shielded me from potential danger with the various harassments and threats to my life through the past few decades, withholding or providing information that would assure my personal safety. For that, I am indebted to her. My association with Neth actually goes way, way back during my PICAA days before I became an official of the BAP. May the Lord guide Neth to eternal life, bless her with eternal peace. I will always remember as a comrade who was called by the Almighty to watch over us in this world of uncertainty and restlessness. Goodbye my Comrade! Neth's body currently lies in state at her home at Bahayang Pagasa, Woodsite 3, Escaler Street, Block 14 Lot 7, Imus, Cavite. |

Atty. Romeo Rizal Vicente
Born December 28, 1933 in Calamba, Laguna. A lawyer and a loyal comrade. A distant
relative of Philippines' National Hero, Dr. Jose Rizal.
Atty. Vicente passed away in March 2011 after more than three months of hospitalization.
One night in late December 2010, while he was on his way home via Commonwealth Highway in Quezon City, a public bus hit the taxi that he was riding. He suffered various injuries to his body, including his head.
Atty. Vicente graduated law at the Ateneo de Manila University and was a former classmate of our BAP Chairman Emeritus and twice FIBA President, Mr. Gonzalo "Lito" G. Puyat II.
Atty. Vicente was my personal lawyer. While he did not receive any remuneration for his services on a regular basis, he basically was responsible for all of my legal matters.
He was the source of my strength, the guiding light, in my lonely battle for what is right, fair and just.
In a lighter note, I remember him as a good singer, who liked to croon sentimental songs that touched one's heart and soul and enabled me to reminisce my younger days when life seemed so care-free.
I salute Comrade Romy for he was truly a gentleman of the first order, and a loyal, trusted friend who never looked the other way during my trials and tribulations.

VICTOR BUENAVENTURA
January, 11, 2010, I was still in the prison while I heard the news from Mr. Gil "Boy" Reglo that Victor Buenaventura has just collapsed along the street of Rizal Avenue, Sta. Cruz District of City of Manila and died of cardiac arrest.
Vic as we called him has been our auditor for so many years taking care of the Basketball Association of the Philippines (BAP) particularly the assessment and membership fee so that we can generate income to pay our operation, secretariat, rental, phone bill, etc.
I feel sad because he was such a considerate person I have known for years and sometimes things does not look happily ever after. May God bless him with love and eternal glory!

Indeed it was later a successful demonic planned with the help of corrupt FIBA secretariat led by racist Patrick Baumann, grand conspirator Borislav Stankovic and the congenital liar Robert Elphinston in connivance with our corrupt system in the Olympic council with the help of this wealthy businessman in the telecommunication.

Mr. Quintellano Z. Literal, former President of the Basketball Association of the Philippines (BAP), passed away last Tuesday night (September 6, 2010) at the age of 77.
Simply known as “Tiny”, Mr. Literal served as president of BAP from January 2001 up to 2005 when he was replaced by former senator Joey Lina due to his health problems. Senator Joey Lina took over at the height of the Philippine Olympic Committee (POC) leadership who instigated to expel the BAP as a member of POC family, unfortunately, that led to the illegal suspension of the BAP from FIBA secretariat.
Born on April 13, 1933 in Dipolog City, Zamboanga del Norte, Mr. Literal has six children - Arlene, Vincent, Maita, Roy, Maan, and Paul.
Mr. Literal is survived by his wife Febes Dalman Literal.
His remains lie at Funenaria Paz at Manila Memorial Park in Sucat, Paranaque. Interment is set on September 14, 2010.
Mr. Literal was a former national player who saw action in Taipei in 60’s.
He was inducted by Ateneo de Manila University Alumni Association president Ramon O. Cojuangco Jr. into the Ateneo Hall of Fame in December 2000 for his contribution to Ateneo varsity team during the NCAA in the 50’s and won the first post-war NCAA champion for Ateneo in 1953.
Former FIBA president and BAP Chairman Emeritus Gonzalo “Lito” Puyat led BAP officials in paying tribute to Mr. Literal.
“We will surely miss him,” said the BAP in a statement. “We may not always been together but our heart remains with the sorrow of the family which was left.”
Aside from Mr. Puyat, the other BAP officials condoled with Mr. Literal’s family include BAP Chairman, Congressman Luis R. Villafuerte; BAP president Prospero “Butch” Pichay; former BAP president and Athletics chief Mr. Go Teng Kok; Joey Lina; Christian Tan; Tony Fabico; Robert Milton Calo; Miss Tisha Abundo; Red Dumuk; Graham Lim; Bonifacio Alentajan; Wilson Young; Johny Tam; Lito Alvarez; Gil Reglo; Leonardo Andres; Manuel Gatchalian, Coach David Zamar and many more.
Among the highlights of Mr. Literal’s term as BAP president came in June 2003, when he led the BAP officials in signing a landmark memorandum of agreement (picture attached, img012) with the Department of Interior & Local Government (DILG), then headed by Secretary Joey Lina. The MOA made the BAP and the DILG as partners in the development of local basketball in the country.
Mr. Tiny Literal also led the BAP delegation to the 17th FIBA World Congress in Indianapolis, United States in 2002. gcl
